WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - The Higher Learning Commission has approved the creation of Purdue University Northwest from two existing campuses.

Purdue University said in a news release that the Higher Learning Commission’s approval was effective Friday. Purdue Northwest is being formed from the unification of Purdue University Calumet in Hammond and Purdue University North Central in Westville.

Purdue trustees gave their approval to form Purdue Northwest in July 2014. The news release says Purdue Northwest will have more than 15,000 students and offer more than 70 graduate and undergraduate programs of study on campuses in Hammond and Westville.

Purdue Calumet Chancellor Thomas Keon was named chancellor-designate of Purdue Northwest in the fall.
