Indiana conservation officers and local authorities in Newton County continued the search on Sunday for a man who went missing the day before on JC Murphy Lake at the Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, at 7 p.m. Saturday Saul Lopez, 24, of Hammond, was floating on a rubber raft with a friend when the raft began to lose air through a puncture hole. Both occupants of the raft tried to row back to shore with the two oars but were unsuccessful, DNR said, at which time Lopez jumped into the water to try and push the boat back into shore.

“Lopez swam for a short time near the raft but quickly went under and never resurfaced,” DNR said. “No lifejackets were onboard the raft at the time of the incident.”
