Westchester Public Library offers “Help for Tough Times” to
its patrons, available at both branches of the library, Thomas Library, 200
W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, and Hageman Library, 100 W. Francis St.,
Porter, as well as at the Westchester Township History Museum, 700 W. Porter
Ave., Chesterton. The list is also available at the Westchester Township
Trustee’s office, located at 100 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, at the Calumet
entrance.
“Help for Tough Times” is a free listing of government and
social service agencies that may be of help to people in these hard economic
times. The list was developed by Westchester Public Library and Westchester
Township Trustee Suzanne Philbrick.
The library offers many free services that may help local
residents adjust to reduced income and/or job loss. Patrons may use the
internet for email or internet services simply by obtaining a free internet
card. Terminals are available at both libraries, and wifi is available at
Thomas Library.
A wide variety of free children’s and family programs are
also available through the library and the museum. For information regarding

then the particular library building for which you are searching.
Books, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as magazines,
are available free of charge to patrons who have a Westchester Public
Library card, which is also free of charge to all Porter County residents.
DVD’s, MP3’s audio and CD books for adult and children are all
available to patrons for check-out.
The library offers free information services: Homework help;
tax forms and low-income tax assistance; community services information;
resume resources; online databases and more.
Meeting rooms are available for non-profit groups, free of
charge. Call 926-7696 to book a meeting room.
Thomas Library is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.,
Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Hageman Library is open
Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 1-5 p.m. and is closed on
Sunday. The Westchester Township History Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday
from 1-5 p.m. The Library
Service Center is open as needed for meetings.
