INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana residents who want to buy alcohol at liquor
stores, pharmacies or supermarkets will have to show a photo ID that proves
their age starting July 1.
A new state law requires that any store selling alcohol check IDs or risk
misdemeanor charges and fines.
Supporters say the new rule will help keep alcohol out of the hands of
minors. But opponents including state Rep. Woody Burton say it goes too far.
Burton says the state should instead require grocery stores and big-box
retailers to keep alcohol behind checkout aisles so that teens can’t get it
without showing ID.
The law does not apply to restaurants, bars and other places where alcohol
is consumed onsite.
