Tribune has been honored by the Izaak Walton League’s Indiana Division
for its coverage of Pavilion Partners’ plans to build a banquet center at
the Indiana Dunes State Park beach.
At its annual
convention, on June 5 in Terre Haute, the Chesterton Tribune was
presented with the Russell Sinclair News Media Award for its “excellent
reporting and editorials” in support of the Izaak Walton League’s Porter
County Chapter and Dunes Action, in the two organizations opposition to what
they came to call “The Mistake on the Lake.”
has been a huge supporter of the Dunes and the efforts to protect them for
decades,” Porter County Chapter President Jim Sweeney said. “We are lucky to
have a locally owned and a locally committed newspaper in Duneland.”
The Porter County
Chapter itself was recognized again with the Indiana Division’s Chapter
Achievement Award, for its opposition to the banquet center, its work in
restoration activities along the East Branch of the Little Calumet River,
and its Family Nature Nights program.
“This is an
incredibly dedicated and talented bunch of people and I could not be more
proud of them,” said Sweeney, who noted that the chapter has grown by over
50 percent over the last few years.
County Chapter member Bill Iltzsche of Valparaiso won an Environmental
Achievement Award for his work as a volunteer.
“We have a lot of
excellent volunteers and Bill is one of them,” Sweeney said. “He is also our
vice-president and shows up at almost all our events. He works hard and he
participates in our decision making. He has been a great addition to the
the hope that Porter County Chapter would bring home more awards after the
Izaak Walton League’s national convention in July in Stevens Point, Wis.
