Almost every single visitor to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore this summer
was happy with the park.
That, according to the annual National Park Service (NPS) survey, which
shows that 97 percent of visitors were satisfied with the National
Lakeshore’s services, facilities, and recreational opportunities.
“The National Park Service works hard to assure that visitors have a good
experience in their national parks and this rating is a tribute to the
excellent employees and volunteers of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore,”
Superintendent Constantine Dillon said in a statement released on Tuesday.
As part of the Government Performance and Results Act, NPS conducts a survey
of visitors at each national park every year. The survey questions are the
same for all parks and the surveys are distributed to a random sample of
park visitors using criteria established by social scientists, the statement
said, and at various times and locations to ensure a representative sample.
The selected visitors complete the survey and then mail it to the NPS office
in Washington, D.C., where the results are tallied and returned to the park.
Highlights from the survey:
•94 percent of visitors were satisfied with assistance received from park
employees.
•93 percent were satisfied with the walkways, trails, and roads at the
National Lakeshore.
•96 percent were satisfied with the experience at the Dorothy Buell Memorial
Visitor Center.
