Open house March 27 on USS permit renewal for hazmat waste site in Portage

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management will hold an open house on U.S. Steel Corporation’s draft permit renewal for its Midwest Plant’s hazardous waste landfill, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. in Portage.

The public will have the opportunity at the open house to ask questions of IDEM regarding the permitting process, the draft decision, and other relevant issues.

U.S. Steel is apply for a renewal of its permit to operate an on-site hazardous waste landfill for the disposal of wastewater treatment sludge from electroplating operations. Constituents of concern in the sludge are cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, silver, and cyanide. “Although the sludge is an F006 listed hazardous waste, it does not exhibit any characteristic toxicity,” IDEM said.
