INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana environmental officials say the most common
complaints to a hotline last year concerned open burning, open dumping and
various odors.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management said Thursday the hotline
took nearly 2,000 calls in 2010, including 241 about open burning, 230 about
various odors and 220 about open dumping.
Rounding out the top five most common complaints were 150 about dust and 112
about farm activities.
IDEM says it investigates all environmental complaints it receives. It says
in most cases, the investigations reveal that individuals responsible for
generating pollution could have easily avoided problems had they been aware
of Indiana environmental rules and best management practices.
