Filing for GOP County Council seat ends today

Porter County Republican Party Chairman Michael Simpson announced that the filing period to fill the vacancy of the 1st District County Council seat ends at 4:30 p.m. today.

Republicans applying must submit a declaration of candidacy form to the County Clerk or at the Porter County Voters Registration Office, located in Room 105 of the County Administration Building, 155 Indiana Ave. in Valparaiso. Letters of intent must be forwarded to Simpson.

As of this morning, four filings have been made. They are Burns Harbor Town Council member Andy Bozak, Portage Fire Chief and Chesterton resident Thomas Fieffer, Director of Administration and HR at Kids Alive International and Jackson Twp. resident Gordon Sheffer and Chesterton Town Council member Jim Ton.

The District 1 County Council seat is currently vacant as Jim Biggs resigned on Dec. 31 before being sworn in as the North District County Commissioner on Jan. 1.

A caucus will be held on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Chesterton Town Hall, starting at 7 p.m.

Candidates will be given up to three minutes to speak and will go by alphabetical order. The candidates may, if they so choose, have an introduction by a party member, no more than two minutes, prior to their speech.
