The Duneland Area Community (DAC) Bands will present the third annual “Music of the Season--A Christmas Celebration” on at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, in Barker Hall, 600 Franklin St. in Michigan City, adjacent to Trinity Church.

The performance will feature the DAC Symphonic, Intermediate and Beginning Bands. Admission for the concert is $3 for adults and $2 for senior citizens and children.

The DAC Band Program was established in 2011 with the goal of providing a community band experience for the youth of Porter and LaPorte counties, the organization said. Sponsored by Trinity Church of Michigan City, St. Patrick School of Chesterton, and Sacred Heart Church of LaPorte, the DAC Program is a musical organization open to all students interested in learning about the world of music through participation in a concert band.

Students in grades 4-12 are invited to explore different musical styles while receiving musical instruction on a concert band instrument of their choice. Members participate in a variety of performances ranging from sporting events and concerts to school events and open air performances. In the coming weeks band members will be taking part in different seasonal events in the area communities.

On Friday, Dec. 6, students of the DAC trumpet choir played for the First Friday Christmas festivities at Trinity Church in downtown Michigan City.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, DAC bands performed Christmas carols for the St. Patrick School book fair at Barnes and Noble bookstore in Valparaiso.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, DAC bands will be performing in the annual DAC Christmas concert at Barker Hall in Michigan City. This year’s theme: “Home for the Holidays.”

The DAC Director of Bands is Karen Rainey, a graduate of Chesterton High School with a Bachelor of Music Education from Butler University in Indianapolis.

The DAC Band Program currently includes students from Notre Dame School, Queen of All Saints School, St. Patrick School, St. Paul Lutheran School, St. Stanislaus School, St. Paul Catholic School, Discovery Charter School, Renaissance Academy, Michigan City Christian Academy, and Marquette High School, as well as home-school students and students from the Michigan City and Duneland public schools.

Rehearsals and lessons for DAC bands are held at Trinity Church in Michigan City, St. Patrick School in Chesterton, and Sacred Heart Church in LaPorte.

The DAC bands are always open to new students and everyone is encouraged to learn more about the program by visiting dacband.org
