Novice speakers open strong at Munster

The speech half of Chesterton High School’s speech and debate team opened its 2013-14 season over the past weekend at a novice tournament hosted by Munster High School.

Eight schools and more than 100 novice students competed in four straight rounds of competition. No team awards were presented but the top eight students in each of the 11 events received certificates recognizing their placement.

CHS had at least one student place in the top eight in each of the six events entered by the team.

Humor led the way with freshman Isabella Portugal taking second place and sophomore Lexi Justak third.

In Duo Interpretation three teams placed: junior Shawn Adams and his partner, sophomore Victoria Hooten, placed third, followed by the freshman team of Cheyenne Montes-Achison and Elaina Chavez in fifth and the freshman team of Keerat Basra and Megan Bernth in eighth.

In Poetry sophomore C.C. Smith placed fifth.

In Prose freshman Hayley O'Keefe took sixth.

In Drama sophomore Isabelle Goodman grabbed sixth.

And in Declamation freshman Andrea Hanas placed seventh.

The tournament was run and judged by the varsity students from each of the schools participating. Joining coaches Eric Schaefer and Jessica Cleary was former student Aliyah Caraballo, along with five varsity students. Varsity team members tabbing or judging included seniors Mikaela Meyer, Danny Vincent, Justyn Lantz, and Jami Ritchea. In addition, junior Kasey O'Keefe and sophomore Ellyn Winski helped with judging.

The team will be attending the novice/varsity invitational hosted by Culver Academy this next weekend.
