The following is a Voice of the People reader opinion:

Charter school process not democratic

Last night, I attended the public meeting regarding the proposed charter school in Porter County. I was not able to speak. And candidly they did not afford ample time for all of the public to be heard.

This runs afoul of the democratic process in such an important issue. I listened to people speak both for and against the proposed school. It was clear to me that that not only is it a continued siphoning of money away from our public schools, that in fact it was an attempt to reduce our children to the status of “commodities” to further the money grab.

Furthermore, the proposed charter school will clearly not be designed to afford the opportunities to children from ALL backgrounds, socio economic status and abilities. I encourage anyone concerned about what has been happening to the funding or shall I say “defunding” of education to stand up and let their voices be heard. You should email your opposition to charterschools@grace.edu As president of the Porter County Council, I am appalled.

Dan Whitten

President, Porter County Council
