The Duneland School Corporation Veterans Memorial Committee invites the community and Gold Star parents to the unveiling of a new Duneland Schools Veterans Memorial on Saturday, May 27, at 9 a.m., in the Chesterton High School Stadium, 2125 S 11th Street, Chesterton. Those in attendance may park in the CHS northeast parking lot.

A monument honoring those who served in the military has been an ongoing goal of Chesterton High School administrators and staff. The June 2, 2016, death of 2014 CHS graduate and West Point Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey provided the catalyst that set the project in motion and helped make this dream a reality.

The large granite monument featuring the emblems of the five branches of the armed forces along with the American flag will honor the memory of those who attended Duneland area schools and made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our great nation. These heroes attended what is now the Duneland School Corporation that was formed by the consolidation of the Jackson, Liberty and Westchester Township schools.

“The area comprising the current Duneland School Corporation has had sons that have given their lives for our country from as early as the Revolutionary War through the current conflict in Afghanistan,” said Jeff Van Drie, CHS Principal. “We have chosen to place this monument in a highly visible area that can be viewed for many years to come by students and the community. All area veterans are welcome to help us dedicate this memorial.”

On Saturday morning, Gold Star parents in attendance are asked to register their loved one at the event and may bring his/her photograph that morning to be on display at the unveiling.

The DSC Veterans Memorial committee includes many school and community volunteers who have worked together on this special project. It was made possible through generous donations that were made in tribute to these individuals, and all who serve, by area residents, businesses and grateful citizens from across the country.
