Duneland Schools hire aides and coaches for new school year

Another round of staff have been hired at the Duneland School Corporation, announced at the school board’s meeting Monday.

The board was introduced to two new second grade teachers -- Michelle Albright at Brummitt Elementary and Michelle Wyatt at Liberty Elementary.

Albright graduated Summa Cum Laude from Purdue University-Calumet in 2014 and Wyatt is a 2011 alum of Chesterton High School.

“It’s been an awesome time so far,” said Albright. “I can’t wait for the rest of the year.”

The latest Duneland personnel report included appointments for various aides and coaching positions around the schools.

At Bailly Elementary, Kristen Janowiak has been appointed as an instructional aide, Dawn Tirado and Heather Huckleby as lunch/recess aides, Amy Taylor and Maliani Correa-Velz as Title 1 aides.

At Brummitt Elementary, Trenton Tyler has been appointed as a technology aide. Nadia Komp and Christina Smith will be instructional aides.

At Jackson Elementary, Rose Pokrzywa, Bonnie Flint and Samantha Coen have all three been hired as instructional aides.

Lori Fields will be a lunch/recess aide at Liberty Elementary. Marrianne Harrison will be an instructional aide at Liberty Intermediate.

Shanna du Mont, Angela Fender and Lisa Cain have been hired as instructional aides at Yost Elementary, along with Julie Fladeland as a lunch/recess aide.

At Westchester Intermediate, Traci Miller will be a lunch/recess aide and Staci Stimmel will be an instructional aide.

Jocelyn Johnson and Tatiana Hulser will be High Ability Aides for the school corporation.

In coaching positions, Kaitlyn Deehr will coach the 8th Grade B Volleyball team at Chesterton Middle School. Brady Severs will be the assistant coach for the CMS Boys Cross Country Team. Breann Fife will coach the 7th Grade B Basketball team and she will be the assistant coach for the CHS girls track team.

At CHS, Pat Antone will coach J.V. Baseball, Justin Jenks will coach freshman football and Dan Caudill will be the assistant coach for Varsity Baseball. Jordan Nelson will be the assistant coach for Boys Golf.

At CMS, Sara Fratto will coach cheerleading and Bill Heintz will be the B team assistant coach for football.

In other appointments, Amanda Hicks has been chosen as the Veteran’s Day Program coordinator, Liz Coutroubis and Kat Zimmermann will be class sponsors of the CHS freshman class. Andrew Hall will be working part-time as a maintenance worker on a temporary basis.

Meanwhile, staff who have resigned recently according to the personnel report are Liberty Intermediate instructional aide Sharon Wozniak, Bailly Elementary Title 1/remediation aide Hayley Wadowski, CHS front desk/detention supervisor Doreen Hilbrich, CHS study hall supervisor Eric Schaefer, CHS lunch aide Vicki Smith, CHS lunch aide Sally Franciskovich, Jackson Elementary Title 1 aide Dolores Laughrey, kitchen helper Donna Moreno, bus driver Dawn Rosene and CHS freshman basketball coach Bryan Nallenweg.


The board approved unanimously, under the recommendation of the service committee, to accept the lease agreement with the Northwest Indiana Education Services Center for the use of three classroom spaces and six parking spaces at Liberty Elementary.

The NWIESC will pay $1,000 per month to use the space which will be paid by offsetting the total funds the school owes in dues to the organization. The contract is for a year with an option to renew for another year.

In other approvals, the board agreed to a bid from Aunt Millie’s Bakeries in Griffith, Ind. to continue being the schools bread supplier for student lunches and Cover Crest Dairy of Hobart for milk this school year.

Music recital

Duneland Schools Superintendent David Pruis informed the school board that the Steinway Concert Grand Piano gifted by Bob Urschel this spring will be played at a student recital on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at the CHS Auditorium for the community’s enjoyment.

Auditions for the recital will be Wednesday, Sept. 2 and registration forms for students must be completed and turned in by this Thursday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m.
