The Duneland Education Foundation is hosting the first annual Larry James 5K
Cross Country Classic trail race on Saturday, June 21. The race is named
after and in memory of, Larry James, the former cross country coach at
Chesterton High School.
For registrations received by June 6, the fee is $15 and includes a moisture
management shirt. For those received after June 6, the fee is $20 and a shirt
is not guaranteed during on site registration. Shirts will, however, be
ordered after the race. On site registration will occur 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. on
race day. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Computerized timing will be provided
with results posted on-line after the race.
Age group awards will be issued three per division, Male and Female. First
place awards will be given to each of the team divisions, Male and Female.
There are twelve age group divisions and three team divisions, including
middle school (6th - 8th grade), high school (9th - 12th grade) and adult (19
years and older). Cross country programs from across Northwest Indiana have
been invited.
On site registration and the race will be held on the former CHS cross
country course at Liberty Intermediate School. The course incorporates the
best parts of the old CHS course at LIS and the Duneland School Corporation’s
newly acquired 26 acres West of Liberty Elementary School. The course is
being designed by the race committee chairman, John Marshall, and CHS
coaches, Brian Carden, Tim Ray and Steve Kearney.
The Foundation has awarded over $110,000 in nearly thirteen years to
educators in the Duneland School Corporation and St. Patrick School. Without
the community’s continued support of fundraising events, the projects
experienced by students would not have occurred.
