CHS makes 2020 Best High School list

Chesterton High School has been named a 2020 Best High School by U.S. News & World Report.

CHS is No. 3,462 in the nation with an overall score of 80.54 out of a possible 100. CHS is also ranked 57th in the State of Indiana and 114th in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation rates, and how well they prepare students for college.

“Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams,” U.S. News & World Report noted. “The AP participation rate at Chesterton Senior High School is 35 percent. The total minority enrollment is 16 percent, and 24 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.”

The CHS scorecard:

-- Took at least one AP exam: 35 percent.

-- Passed at least one AP exam: 25 percent.

-- Mathematics proficiency: 50 percent.

-- Reading proficiency: 68 percent.

-- Graduation rate: 92 percent.

-- College Readiness Index rank: 4,400th in the nation; 61st in the state.

-- College Curriculum Breadth Index rank: 3,645th in the nation; 52nd in the state.

-- Math and reading proficiency rank: 8,255th in the nation; 180th in the state.

-- Graduation rate rank: 8,799th in the nation (tie); 230th in the state (tie).
