Smart Start Preschool has openings

Back To Front Page

It is not too late to consider enrolling young children in preschool for the 2014-15 school year at Smart Start Preschool, conveniently located off of Highway 49 and 1100 N, Chesterton.

The school presently has some spots open in the three-year-olds’ class that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays and the Pre-K class that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Early education is so important that state and national education agencies are advocating more education for preschoolers to get them prepared for school and on a path to life-long learning.

Duneland Schools have instituted all-day Kindergarten, so Smart Start teacher Pat Jackson suggests to parents that starting their children in a two- or three- day- a- week program is a gentle way to ease early learners into the routine of school. “With so many pressures on parents and children these days, preschool introduces the child to some independence while still allowing for nurturing in a caring and gentle atmosphere. An added benefit is that Mom or Dad can get used to the parental/child separation anxiety a little more easily when they start with just a few days a week.”

The curriculum at Smart Start promotes basic reading readiness skills, beginning academics and science in combination with strong socialization skills, which are very important in preparing the student for success in school. Children experience daily centers for academics, crafts for small motor development in a variety of mediums, and independent play. Socialization and imagination skills are developed during free group playtime. Music class further enhances brain development through exploration of rhythm, pitch, voice, motion, memorization, and instruments.

The school is located in St. Paul Lutheran Church at 50 E and 1100 N in Chesterton. Teachers are Carolyn Neary, Pat Jackson, and Danielle Johnston. Classes are held from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

An open house will be held Thursday, August 28, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Prospective parents and students can schedule a tour of the class areas prior to the open house.
