Porter Park Sounds of Summer concerts begin Wednesday

Back To Front Page

The Porter Park Department will present four delightful evenings of dancing and music in beautiful Hawthorne Park. Dance lessons and concerts are free and will be held rain or shine. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy a picnic while listening to great music. Food vendors will be on hand at every concert.

Each evening will kick off with free dance lessons provided by Duneland Ballroom starting at 6 p.m. in the gazebo. No dance partner? No problem! Dance lessons are designed to get each participant gliding and spinning among new friends, while we all learn new dance steps.

Musical performances begin at 7 p.m. in the East Shelter, just off Waverly Rd. While there is ample parking along Ackerman and Coslett, priority parking nearest to the East Shelter is reserved for senior guests and those with handicapped parking placards.

On Wednesday, July 31, virtuoso guitarist, and local Porter resident, Peter Aglinskas will perform a solo concert of original finger-style guitar arrangements from his CDs "Sepia Session" and "South Shore Soul," as well as rock classics, featuring sizzling renditions of "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" and "Highway Star." Aglinskasí music is infused with elements from jazz, R&B, and rock 'n roll, with a technique firmly rooted in the classical music tradition.

On Wednesday, August 7, "Cool Sounds from Hot Brass" will fill the park when South Shore Brass Ensemble performs music by Mozart, Dukas, and Holst as well as Dixieland, Ragtime, the Roaring Twenties, and George M.Cohan. This marvelous brass sextet consists of Charles Mann, Larry Lane and Chuck Bailey on trumpets; Phil Hahn, horn; Len Bessette, trombone; and John Weber, tuba.

On Wednesday, August 14, City Lights Band will wrap up the 2013 season. Comprised of musicians from Chicago, Northwest Indiana and Southeast Michigan, the members have performed and been associated with many different groups trough the years. They bring a wealth of experience and talent. Thrill to jazz and pop favorites sung and played with style. . .and don't forget your dancing shoes, you will want to dance the night away with City Lights Band.
