Porter County Parks set activities for final days of July

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department lists its activities and programs available to residents for their wellness and enjoyment throughout the next few weeks.

*  Sunset Hill Farm 80th Anniversary Festival: Mark your calendars for July 26 to join us for a free festival at Sunset Hill Farm County Park to celebrate the farmís rich 80 year history. The event will include games and activities for all ages along with a historic baseball game between the Deep River Grinders and Sunset Hill Colonels at 12 p.m. and a museum and presentation featuring fascinating information on this vital piece of Porter County history. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. Bring the whole family out for this free and fun event.

*  Camp FUNset Registration Still Open!: Join the parks department for the final four, fun-filled, week-long, sessions of Camp FUNset! The next camp is Aspiring Artists, running July 28-31. Campers will get to try their hand at a variety of craft and art projects all different from our first art camp of the summer, Check out more details or register at www.portercountyparks.org or call our office at 219-465-3586.

*  Walk Dawn of the Dunes-Half Marathon Training Program: Do you want to do something amazing? This 12 week program on Thursdays at Sunset Hill Farm starting on Aug. 7 and Sundays (location to be announced) on Aug. 24 will help fulfill your goal of completing a half marathon – Dawn of the Dunes in Gary on Sunday, Oct. 26. The cost for the program is $75. You must be able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes. Includes race registration and t-shirt, weekly training schedule, check-ins, workout tips and motivational emails. Open to men and women 18 years or older.

*  Meet the Animals: On Friday, July 25, families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm from 10 to 11 a.m. to meet the animals and their caretakers. This is a free program.

*  Family Hikes: On Friday, July 25, come out and enjoy Sunset Hill Farm with the park naturalist from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A new month will always bring a new topic for exploring and discussing from geology to history and beyond. This is a free program.

*  Dream Catchers: On Sunday, July 27, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Sunset Hill Farm, join an instructor to make your own dream catchers. You will be provided feathers, beads, etc. that you will incorporate into your dream catcher. The meaning behind dream catchers will also be discussed. Cost for this program is $15.

*  Restorative Retreat: Plan for a day long restorative retreat on Sunday, July 27, that will focus on both the mind and the body through yoga and meditation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Brincka-Cross Gardens. The day will include a light healthy lunch. Cost for this program is $55.

*  Gardenside Chat: Every Monday and Wednesday from June to October, meet the Park Horitculturalist at Sunset Hill Farm from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help plant, weed and maintain the garden and ask your own gardening questions. This is a free program.

*  Year Round Run Club: On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m., join the Sunset Hill Run Club for a run to discover the beauty of Sunset Hill. The length of the run varies but will traverse grass, hills and woodland trails. This is a free program.

*  Womenís Walk Club at Sunset Hill Farm County Park-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 a.m. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Sunset Dog Walkers at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Bring your four-legged friend on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. The walk will offer wellness information and encouragement for the dogs and their walkers. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekday Walk at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park. The program continues each Wednesday at 6 p.m. until Oct. 29. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Open to men and women 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekly Open Studio with Acrylics: Beginners will learn basic painting techniques from an experienced acrylic painter. Sessions will be on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Season artists are also welcome to come and bring their own ideas for projects. No personal supplies needed. Cost is $5.
