Porter County Parks host music festival and outdoor activities in August

The Porter County Parks Department announces the following activities and programs for residents to enjoy during the month of August.

Sunset Hill Farm Programs

*  Coloring Circle for Adults: On Wednesdays, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 30, come out to the coloring circle for fun, socialization, and relaxation. Light beverages, snacks, and all supplies are included. Each session will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The price is $20 for the series and $5 for each drop-in.

*  Public Hike: Terrific Turtles: Resident can come out for this free program on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.

A naturalist will guide the hike for a look at the turtles at the pond at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. During this hike explore their habitats and learn more about these fascinating reptiles. Meet in the parking lot.

*  Prairie Magic Music Festival: This outdoor music festival in Sunset Hill Farmís amphitheater will celebrate rock, blues and Americana with The Planetary Blues Band, The Crawpuppies, Foster, Ross and Young, The Blues Project, and The Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra. The festival will be on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 1 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and free for children 12 and under.

This year, camping is available for $5. Valpo Velvet and Bartlettís Grill will be providing food and craft beer. Proceeds benefit the Porter County Parks Foundation and the Blues Project – promoting music education in schools. Tickets are available at the door or at

*  Health in Your Backyard: A weed is a plant growing in the wrong place, or is it? Many plants we call weeds are not only edible, they are also medicinal. There will be an exploratory walk around Sunset Hill Farm County Park to identify them in the wild on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The walk will include an informative discussion of useful local weeds. The cost for this program is $15.

*  Youth Cross Country at Sunset Hill Campground: Wednesdays starting Aug. 30 to Oct. 18, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m., boys and girls ages 4-12 of all abilities and skill levels are welcome to join the Porter County Parks Cross Country Team. This program will introduce children to the fun and satisfaction of running. Children will run with youngsters their own age and run age-appropriate distances. The course will take them up and down hills, over fields, and through Rogers Lakewood and Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Competition will be against the Valpo Parks and Valpo YMCA teams. Meets are tentatively scheduled for Saturday mornings, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, 14, and 21. Registration is open through Sept. 20, 2017. Cost for the program is $45.

Brincka Cross Gardens Programs

*  Brincka Cross Tour: On Sunday, Aug. 13, from 10 to 11 a.m., come explore Porter Countyís hidden gem! Brincka Cross Gardens is a lush and unique park hidden away in the woods. Come learn about its history, explore the distinctive home, and tour the artfully designed gardens. This is a free program.

*  Dream Circle Share: On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., share and explore dreams in a safe, non-judgmental setting. Take the time to consider the wisdom dreams may offer. Cost for this program is $10.

Programs on the Go

Cancer Nutrition: At the Hebron Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Annetta Jones of Purdue Extension Porter County will lead this informative class which will cover healthy lifestyle choices for preventing cancer and staying healthy after treatment. This is a free program.

*  Acrylic Painting at Kouts Public Library: Create your own step-by-step masterpiece on Thursday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included.

*  Acrylic Painting at Valparaiso Public Library: Create your own step-by-step masterpiece on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. The same project will be taught at each session. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included. All supplies provided.

*  Acrylic Painting at Hawthorne Park: Create your own step-by-step masterpiece on Wednesday, Aug. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included. All supplies provided.
