Porter County Park system offers a lot to do in August

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department has made its monthly list of activities and programs available to residents for their wellness and enjoyment throughout August.

*  Walk Dawn of the Dunes-Half Marathon Training Program: Do you want to do something amazing? This 12 week program on Thursdays at Sunset Hill Farm starting on Aug. 7 and Sundays (location to be announced) on Aug. 24 will help fulfill your goal of completing a half marathon Š Dawn of the Dunes in Gary on Sunday, Oct. 26. The cost for the program is $75. You must be able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes. Includes race registration and t-shirt, weekly training schedule, check-ins, workout tips and motivational emails. Open to men and women 18 years or older.

*  Meet the Animals: On Friday, Aug. 8, families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. to meet the animals and their caretakers. This is a free program.

*  Family Hikes: On Friday, Aug. 8, come out and enjoy Sunset Hill Farm with the park naturalist from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A new month will always bring a new topic for exploring and discussing from geology to history and beyond. This is a free program.

*  Canning Techniques By Purdue Extension: An Educator from Purdue Extension will provide tips and techniques for canning a variety of foods at Sunset Hill Farm on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m. This is a free program.

*  Young Artists at Sunset Hill: Starting on Aug. 9, each first Saturday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm, a youth painting class will be available for all skill levels. Each month will focus on a different project. This month’s theme is Paint Your Summer. Participants will create and take home their project the same day. The cost for the program is $8.

*  Dream Circle Share: Join Dr. Joyce Scully on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Brinkca-Cross Gardens for Dream Circle Share from 12 to 2 p.m. Come share and explore your dreams in a safe, non-judgmental setting. Take time to consider what wisdom your dreams may offer for your life. Cost for this program is $10.

*  Reiki Level 1: Reiki is a Japanese technique for working with the life energy that flows through our bodies. This Reiki Level 1 class, taught by Kate Schlobohm, teaches techniques to increase and direct that energy for relaxation and optimal well being. The class will be on Sunday, Aug. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Brincka-Cross Gardens. Cost is $50. Participants must take Reiki 1 before participating in Reiki 2.

*  Evening Escapades: On Wednesday, Aug. 20 escape the weekday grind by coming out to enjoy a relaxing evening activity with the Park Naturalist at Sunset Hill Farm from 6 to 7 p.m. This is a free program. Sunset Hill is a vast area full of many different things just waiting to be discovered. Take a break during the week to enjoy all that nature has to offer at Sunset Hill Farm.

*  Senior Hikes: Seniors are welcome to enjoy a free hike on Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Hikes will be every third Wednesday of the month. This month’s theme is “Our Forest Transition.” Colonel Murray planted most of the trees that would create this forest at the top of the hill. Interestingly over the 80 years of the farm at Sunset Hill major things have started to change. The once mostly pine forest has slowly transitioned to deciduous naturally in many areas. Come out for a cool hike through the woods to explore.

*  Meditation Mondays: On Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Brincka-Cross Gardens, join Cynthia Smith to learn the ins and outs of meditation, which will focus on both the mind and body. Cost for each program is $7.

*  Gardenside Chat: Every Monday and Wednesday from June to October, meet the Park Horitculturalist at Sunset Hill Farm from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help plant, weed and maintain the garden and ask your own gardening questions. This is a free program.

*  Year Round Run Club: On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m., join the Sunset Hill Run Club to discover the beauty of Sunset Hill. The length of the run varies but will traverse grass, hills and woodland trails. This is a free program.

*  Women’s Walk Club at Sunset Hill Farm County Park-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 a.m. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Sunset Dog Walkers at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Bring your four-legged friend on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. The walk will offer wellness information and encouragement for the dogs and their walkers. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekday Walk at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park. The program continues each Wednesday at 6 p.m. until Oct. 29. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Open to men and women 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekly Open Studio with Acrylics: Beginners will learn basic painting techniques from an experienced acrylic painter. Sessions will be on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Season artists are also welcome to come and bring their own ideas for projects. No personal supplies needed. Cost is $5.
