A Chicago resident reported the theft of a firearm on Sunday at the North Porter County Conservation Club, 933 N. Calumet Ave. in Liberty Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police, at 10:45 a.m. the Chicago resident--who was attending a firearms competition at the Conservation Club--un-holstered her Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun and left it on a table in the designated safe area to use a portable restroom. On her return, the handgun was gone, she advised.

The Chicago resident and employees searched for the weapon without success. “The firearm was never located nor did any other person state that they had seen it,” police said.

“I had all the participants in the competition gather around where I explained the situation to them,” the investigating officer stated in his report. “I asked them to check their bags in case the firearm was accidentally picked up by someone that it did not belong to. After doing this, the firearm was still not located.”

Police put the handgun’s value at $550.
