Old Glory flown in Afghanistan has new home

One particular Old Gory has a new home, proudly flying outside of Tonya’s Patisserie on 4th St. and Broadway in Chesterton.

The flag has a special story which started back in November of 2009 when Specialist Jake Wetzel, while on leave from his duty in Afghanistan with the Indiana National Guard, came to visit his mother Susan Sheldon, who works at Tonya’s Patisserie.

While there he noticed the American flag outside was a bit tattered. Owner Tonya told him it had been recently torn during a brutal wind storm, but she was planning on replacing it as soon as she could.

Specialist Jake Wetzel returned to Afghanistan, but remembered the image of the tattered flag. When he came home in March of 2010, he brought with him a new flag. This one however, was one that flew over their FOB (Forward Operating Base) in Fenty, Afghanistan.

So the flag traveled from a war in Afghanistan, to downtown Chesterton. Come into Tonya’s and pay your respects to a special flag on this Memorial Day as they say thank you to all our troops protecting our freedom.
