Dunes Action! will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, August 8, to update supporters on the current status of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Pavilion Reuse Project at the Indiana Dunes State Park. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., at the Baugher Center, 100 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton.

The DNR signed a lease with Pavilion Partners LLC, of Valparaiso, to rehabilitate the 1930’s era Beach Pavilion and build a new commercial banquet facility next to it.

Attendees will get an update on the challenge to the development in the park based on Land and Water Conservation Fund restrictions. The Porter County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and Dunes Action have made a case for stopping the project on the grounds that it violates federal guidelines set out in the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965. The LWCF guidelines require approval from the National Park Service prior to the start of the project.

Updates will include the status of the different stages of the project and their compliance with state and federal regulations affecting the projects, such as the LWCF.

“It’s not over, and we are not giving up,” Jim Sweeney, of the Porter County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, said.

Volunteers for committee work are welcome. Donations to continue building the legal fund will be gratefully accepted.

Dunes ACTION is a grassroots, all-volunteer, non-partisan coalition that is opposed to the plan by the IDNR to allow a private development company to build and operate a massive conference/banquet center on the lakefront at the Indiana Dunes State Park.
