County tops 2,500 cases with new one day record of 50

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning a record number of new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours: 50 (37 new cases on Thursday), to bring the total so far to 2,515, up from 2,465 on Thursday.

The previous single day record was 38, set on Aug. 29.

Of those 50 new cases, 29--or 58 percent--were diagnosed in the younger demographics: six in the 0-19 (368 total); three in the 20-29 (479 total); 10 in the 30-39 (405 total); and 10 in the 40-49 (375 total).

To date, 368 cases have been diagnosed in children or teens, or 14.6 percent of all cases (14.7 percent on Thursday). On July 7, only 39 children or teens had been diagnosed of the 765 total cases at the time: or 5.1 percent.

Of the 50 cases reported over the last 24 hours, 21--or 42 percent--were diagnosed in the older demographics (30 percent on Thursday): 12 in the 50-59 (381 total); six in the 60-69 (249 total); 70-79 (153 total); and one in the 80-89 (69 total). Total in 90-and-over: 36.

Meanwhile, one patient is currently hospitalized, unchanged from Thursday. Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting 2,118 total recoveries and 49 total deaths: 348, up from 298 on Thursday.

A total of 119 COVID-19 cases has been reported in Porter County long-term care facilities, unchanged from Thursday. Of those 119, 31 have died, 88 have recovered, and none is currently hospitalized. As of today, there were no active cases in the county’s long-term care facilities, unchanged from Thursday.

No additional COVID-19 deaths were reported today. To date, 49 Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 304 cases (301 on Thursday). Fifty-eight active cases.

-- Liberty: 156 cases (149 on Thursday). Thirty active cases.

-- Jackson: 50 cases (unchanged from Thursday). Seven active cases.

-- Pine: 12 cases (unchanged from Thursday). One active case.

Other townships:

-- Portage: 860 cases (840 on Thursday). 114 active cases.

-- Center: 672 cases (660 on Thursday). Seventy-nine active cases. Center Township’s total includes Valparaiso University students.

-- Washington: 103 cases (101 on Thursday). Eight active cases. Washington Township’s total includes Porter County Jail inmates.

-- Union: 141 cases (140 on Thursday). Twenty-five active cases.
