Be a Santa's Helper: Chesterton officers and firefighters collect for struggling families

Back To Front Page

Not all of Santa’s Helpers are elves.

Some of them live right here in Chesterton and you can be one of them.

The Chesterton Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141 and Chesterton International Association of Firefighters Local 4600 are once again teaming up to give struggling families in town a little merrier Christmas--more colorful, more bountiful.

With funds donated by you, Lodge 141 and Local 4600 will be purchasing gifts and food for folks and then Santa Claus himself will be making a special trip to deliver them.

“We’re just trying to give those affected by the economic hard times a little brighter Christmas,” Cpl. Fernando Dominguez of Lodge 141, told the Chesterton Tribune. “We really enjoy serving the public. It makes us proud to go above and beyond at this time of season.”

Dominguez noted that normally a police officer is really the last person you ever want to talk to, because if you happen to need one something, somewhere, has gone wrong in your life. “So it’s great to be able to bring happiness to people. We don’t get that chance as often as we’d like.”

“It’s a giving time,” Engineer and Local 4600 President Eric Camel said. “This is the season of giving. And we want to give back to the community, give needy families a helping hand.”

The CPD and CFD are right now putting family names on a list. Deliveries will be made on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Donations are being accepted at both the Chesterton Police and Fire departments. Please make your check payable either to Chesterton FOP 141 or Chesterton Firefighters Local 4600 and drop them off either at the CPD or the CFD.
