Chesterton resident Ethan Hall in final lap to Oak Street Beach: Ethan
Hall left Porter Beach at 5 a.m. Wednesday and made it to Oak Street Beach a
little after 7:15 p.m. in his quest to swim across Lake Michigan and raise
funds for Juvenile Diabetes research. He swam a total of 23 miles of the 29
it would have taken, but was forced into the boat for six miles because of

A Chesterton High School student battled 6 foot waves as he attempted to swim
29 miles across Lake Michigan from Porter Beach to Chicago.
Seventeen-year-old Ethan Hall spent part of his trip resting in a boat but
swam the last few miles to shore at Oak Street Beach on Wednesday evening.
Hall entered the water at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning in Porter, but he says he
began experiencing symptoms of hypothermia after swimming about 10 miles and
encountering large waves.
This morning he said at the 20 mile mark, it was 5 p.m. and he realized he
wouldn’t be at Oak Street Beach until about 10:30 p.m.
He knew a lot of people were waiting for him so he decided not to make up the
six miles he was in the boat because of high waves.
He swam the final three miles making it a swim of about 23 miles of the 29
mile route.
He was in the water for 14 hours he said.
Hall was accompanied by a boat with his mother and four friends who provided
him with food and water during the 14-hour trip.
The Chesterton High School senior says his swim raised about $700 for
juvenile diabetes research.
“My next goal is to make the State Swim meet this upcoming year,” he said.
