4H to educate and entertain at Porter County Fair

The Porter County Fair kicks off this week with a full schedule of events and free entertainment provided by local 4-H clubs.

Highlights include the 4-H 4-Mile Hustle, the Taste of 4-H Foods Auction, the Celebration Sale, and the Master Showmanship Contest.

The fair opens officially at 12 p.m. this Thursday at the county fairgrounds, located at 217 E. Division Road -- east of Indiana 49. Admission is $6 per person or free before 12 p.m. on all days of the fair.

The 4-H Exhibit Building will open at 10 a.m. on all days except for Thursday, July 17 and Sunday, July 20, when it will open at noon.

Following is a daily list of 4-H related shows and events that can be enjoyed by the public during the fair from July 17-26:

Thursday, July 17 - 4-H Dog Obedience Show will be in the Livestock Show Arena at 8 a.m. and 4-H Dog Showmanship will be at 11 a.m. in the Show Arena.

Friday, July 18 - Rabbit Check-in will be from 7 to 11 a.m. in the Rabbit/Poultry Barn followed by the 4-H Rabbit Show at 1 p.m. Dog check-in will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Show Arena for the 4-H Dog Agility Show at 2 p.m. The 4-H Model Bridge Strength Test and Breaking Exhibition will be at the Buggy Wheel Pavilion from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Open Draft Horse Show starts at 6 p.m. at the Horse Arena.

Saturday, July 19 - The 4-H 1/4-mile Family Fun Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. along with the 4-H 4-Mile Hustle beginning at 8:30 a.m. The 4-H Draft Horse Show will begin at 9 a.m. in the Horse Arena. The 4-H Rabbit Show is at 9 a.m. in the Rabbit/Poultry Barn. 4-H Barbecue Set-up and competition starts at 10 a.m. inside the Park Place Pavilion. Taste of 4-H Foods Auction begins at 12 p.m. inside the Buggy Wheel Pavilion. Check-in for the 4-H Dog Show is from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Show Arena with the Dog Show at 5 p.m.

Sunday, July 20 -- Check-in for the Cat Show is from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Show Arena followed by the Cat Show at 1 p.m. 4-H Music Project Performances will be given in the Park Place Pavilion from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The 4-H Beef Carcass on Hoof Show will start at 6 p.m. in the Show Arena. The 4-H Goat Project Costume Class is at 7 p.m. in the Show Arena.

Monday, July 21 - The 4-H Lamb Carcass on Hoof and Royale Class Show will start at 8 a.m. in the Show Arena, followed by the 4-H Market Lamb Show and Lamb Lead Show at 9 a.m. The 4-H Horse and Pony Project Test will be given at 11 a.m. at the Horse Arena and at 1 p.m. starts the Horse and Pony Trail Classes. The 4-H Swine Show is at 5 p.m.

Tuesday, July 22 - The 4-H Market Swine show is at 8 a.m. in the Show Arena Horse and Pony English Classes are at 10 a.m. at the Horse Arena. At 5 p.m. in the Show Arena is the 4-H Goat Show.

Wednesday, July 23 - Pigeons judging takes place 8:30 a.m. in the Rabbit/Poultry Barn followed by the 4-H Poultry Show at 9 a.m. The 4-H Cattle Groom Contest starts at 9:30 a.m. in the Show Arena followed by the 4-H Beef Show at 10 a.m. Horse and Pony Western Classes are at 10 a.m. in the Horse Arena.

Thursday, July 24 - The 4-H Dairy Show begins at 8 a.m. in the Show Arena. The 4-H Poultry Show begins at 9 a.m. in the Rabbit/Poultry Barn. Horse and Pony Halter Classes are at 10 a.m. in the Horse Arena; The 4-H Celebration Sale starts at 6 p.m. inside the Show Arena. Horse and Pony Versatility Classes are at 6 p.m. at the Horse Arena.

Friday, July 25 - The 4-H Rooster Crowing Contest begins at 10 a.m. in Rabbit/Poultry Barn. Horse and Pony Gaming Events are at 10 a.m. in the Horse Arena. The Youth Livestock Judging Contest starts at 1 p.m. in the Show Arena. The Master Showmanship Contest begins with its opening ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Horse Arena and will later move into the Show Arena.

Saturday, July 26 - At 10 a.m. the 4-H Miniature Equine Show takes place in the Show Arena. Open Draft Horse Show Ground Driving will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Horse Arena with the Open Draft Horse Show Hitch Class at 5 p.m. The Battle of the Barns games and 4-H Ten-Year Member Recognition starts at 7 p.m. in the Show Arena.

Porter County 4-H staff will be available daily to answer questions at the 4-H Fair Office inside the 4-H Exhibit Building.
