WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) - Two dozen workers laid off in January are back on the
job at ArcelorMittal's plant in Weirton.
Mark Glyptis of United Steelworkers Local 2911 says that puts the total
number of unemployed workers at less than 100.
Glyptis says the Weirton operations have been slowly transforming from a
fully integrated mill that made and finished steel to one that is now just a
tin mill with about 900 workers.
At its peak, the former Weirton Steel employed nearly 14,000 people.
Demand for tin has surged, and Glyptis says tin prices are now at their
highest in two years.
But company spokesman Marybeth Holford also cautions that ArcelorMittal
customers will see the impact of higher raw materials costs during the
remainder of the year.
