A Chesterton resident has been charged with theft after Chesterton Police
said that he embezzled thousands of dollars from the investment club of
which he was treasurer.
Robert Dille, 50, with a listed address in the 800 block of South 14th
Street, was charged with theft on Monday. Theft is a Class D felony
punishable by a term of six months to three years.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Det. Dave Cincoski of the
CPD, on June 3, 2010, the president of the Duneland Profiteers Club reported
that she believed Dille had made unauthorized withdrawals from the clubs
cash and e-Trade accounts totaling approximately $25,000.
In fact, the president advised, "discrepancies began to show in the accounts
of the club" about a month earlier, when a member asked Dille for a partial
disbursement of her own investment, in the amount of $15,000. At the time
Dille said that more than $21,000 was available and promised the member that
he would contact her when the check was ready, the president advised. Two
weeks later, however, that check had not been cut, Dille said that he "was
out of town on a state of emergency business," and he made an appointment
for 4 p.m. on Memorial Day to present the member the check, the president
advised.
"The meeting did not take place," Cincoski stated in his affidavit, and when
Dilles residence was checked by club members it "appeared to be vacated."
"When reviewing the account on June 2, 2010, (the president) should have
seen an account balance of $18,305," Cincoski further stated. "Instead the
account balance was $199.86. (The president) also saw numerous checks had
been written to Dille and Dille Heating and Air Conditioning without club
authorization. Upon reviewing the e-Trade account, (the president) observed
an account balance of less than $100, when, according to (the president),
the balance should have been in excess of $55,000. (The president) advised
that the club should have assets of approximately $82,000, to which
presently the clubs assets total $200."
On Monday, Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper issued a warrant for
Dilles arrest and set bond at $10,000 cash only.
